Footballers who had the choice of playing for France

  1. Leroy Sane (Germany):

The Manchester City attacker was eligible to play for Germany, France and Senegal. Sane’s father was born in Senegal and brought up in France. Sane was born in Germany and was able to be eligible for Germany because of his birth and mother Regina Weber. Sane said he was never interested in representing France or Senegal and only had Germany on his mind. He was left out of the German squad that went to the 2018 World Cup.


  1. Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal):

Koulibaly was born in France and played for Metz initially before he moved to Belgium and then to Italy. He chose to play for Senegal at the exact time when France manager Didier Deschamps was planning to select him for the national team. Koulibaly played for France at the U-20 level but in the end decided to play for Senegal as France took too much time to select him, for which the Napoli defender has no regrets.


  1. Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina):

The former Real Madrid striker was born in France and everyone would have expected that he would follow his father’s steps and play for France. But given that he was moved to Argentina when he was 10 months old, he was more motivated to play for Argentina as he wanted to play for the country he was brought up in. He is currently Argentina’s sixth highest goal-scorer of all time and is a key member of the national team.


  1. Riyad Mahrez (Algeria):

Mahrez was born in France but his parents had an Algerian origin and connection. But he used to spend a lot of time in Algeria during his holidays. He was quite vocal about his desire to play for Algeria and he soon became a member to play in the 2014 World Cup. It took time for Mahrez to be effective with the Algerian national team but he has looked sharp once he settled.


  1. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon):

The sensational former Borussia Dortmund striker had multiple teams for which he could play for internationally in the likes of Italy, France , Spain and Gabon but he decided to choose Gabon as his father once represented and captained it. He was born in France, his father played for Gabon, his mother is Spanish and since his youth football career was spent in Italy, Aubameyang had some amazing options to play for. He has scored 24 goals in 57 games so far in his international career.
