The French right back was a huge surprise in the 2018 World Cup. He was equally effective both in the attack and defence and of course his goal against Argentina was a phenomenal one. In comparison to Dani Alves, Pavard not only did well with his club in the Bundesliga but was very impressive for the French national team in the World Cup. Pavard faced competition from Joshua Kimmich for the right back position and although Kimmich had a wonderful season with German giants Bayern Munich, his performances at the World Cup was one to forget. He was caught out of position more than often and compared to him, Pavard provided much more solidity at the back. Pavard surely deserved a place in the team, even ahead of Joshua Kimmich.
- Kevin De Bruyne:
There are very few midfielders in the world who can dominate a game as good Kevin De Bruyne does with Manchester City. The Belgian had an outstanding time last season with the Manchester club as he helped them win the Premier League title. His playmaking and goal scoring abilities were a delight to watch and even with the Belgium national team in the 2018 World Cup, De Bruyne looked quite good in a deeper role. On the other hand, as good a player N’golo Kante was in the World Cup for France, he struggled to help Chelsea in the same way last season. One can definitely argue his choice over De Bruyne given how both the players were influential for their respective clubs in England. De Bruyne definitely deserved a place in the FIFA team of the year ahead of Kante.
- Mohamed Salah:
There was very little that Salah did wrong with Liverpool last season. The Egyptian winger with his sweet left foot was a monster in the Premier league last season. He was involved in scoring 44 goals and assisting in 16 others in the 52 matches he played last season. He was arguably the best player in the Premier league last season and was rightly nominated for the FIFA Best Men Player of the year award. While Eden Hazard had a good time in the World Cup with Belgium, his performance with Chelsea last season were surely not up to the mark or at least not as good as what Salah did with Liverpool. Salah even played a crucial role in helping Egypt reach the 2018 World Cup. Compared to Eden Hazard, Salah did much better in almost every department and surely deserved a place in the FIFA Team of the Year.
