Liverpool have suffered their first defeat of their pre-season campaign, by losing 5-4 on penalties to Atletico Madrid in the fifth edition of the Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Wednesday.
After showing impressive preseason form, outclassing Hertha Berlin 3-0 Saturday and with a 3-0 win against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Tuesday to reach the final, Jurgen Klopp’s side were brought back down to earth by the Spanish giants, losing in the penalty shoot out.
After 90 minutes both sides had recorded one goal each, with Albanian youth player Kaidi Bare opening the scoring in the 33rd minute for Atletico, before Brazilian Roberto Firmino’s spot kick levelled up for the Reds with seven minutes remaining.
Having won the toss, Liverpool went first and Firmino scored, before Antoine Griezmann equalled for Atletico. Jordan Henderson went next but missed his goal leaving Atletico to go ahead after Fernando Torres found the back of the net.
D.Origi, Ryan Kent, Marko Grujic then scored for Liverpool, while Gabi, Nico Gaitan, Filipe Luis scored for Atletico.
Despite the outcome Klopp was far from disappointed with the result.
“These games are always very important and you’re playing at the top level, so it’s very important how you prepare and what kind of state of mind you’re in,” he said.
“If you want to win, obviously you want to (draw) a smaller opponent, but we played against Bayern yesterday and we can play much better.
“We’re very tired today and we want to make life as difficult as possible for our opponents. The only (bad) thing that happened here today was the goal we conceded.
“We had 20 shots on goal, and you’ve got to do something from that, but Atletico are a very strong team.
“I’m really happy we still have one-and-a-half weeks and I’m happy that we don’t have to play tomorrow!”
