Manchester United have lifted the Europa League trophy after an emotional 2-0 victory over Dutch outfit Ajax at Stockholm’s Friends Arena on Wednesday night.
It is United’s second major trophy this season and secured Champions League spot for next season, it has also put them alongside Chelsea in becoming one of just five clubs to win every historic European trophy.
The game started after a minute’s silence in remembrance of the atrocities of Monday evening at the MEN Arena in Manchester that claimed the life of 22 people including children.
United got off to a strong start with their £89million man Paul Pogba opening the scoring after 18 minutes, with a deflected effort.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan doubled the lead straight after the break in the 48th minute. Juan Mata’s curling corner from the left is met by Chris Smalling and his downward header drops into the six yard box. With his back to goal, Mkhitaryan leapt to hook the ball past Onana sparking vigorous celebrations and ‘Manchester’ chants.
It is without doubt that Manchester United deserved the win after outplaying and outthinking Ajax. Jose Mourinho was chucked up in the air by his assistants on the pitch, the win meaning an awful lot to the Portuguese boss.
“We know things like this are very sad all over the world,” said Pogba after the win, referring to the attack.
“We had to focus. Manchester – we won for them. We played for England, we played for Manchester and we played for them — the people who died.”
“The goal was to win all the way through this season. We’ve done it, and we’re proud,” he continued.
“People say we’ve had a bad season but the prize is great and we’ve done it now. We have three trophies so enjoy it now,” he added.
