Manchester City’s all time top goal scorer Sergio Aguero has reached another milestone scoring his 200th goal for the club during their 2-0 Community Shield win over Chelsea.
Aguero broke Eric Brook’s 78-year record as City’s all-time top scorer after he scored the third goal in a 4-2 win over Napoli last November to top Brook’s 177 total.
It took just 12 minutes in the first game of the new season for Aguero to open his 2018/19 account with a left footed strike after he collected a short pass from England U-17 star Phil Foden. The Argentine wasted no time blasting past former team-mate and compatriot Willy Caballero.
The 30-year-old has already set other notable milestones for City with his 12th hat-trick coming against Leicester earlier this year, which extended his lead at the top of the trebles. With eight Premier League trebles, he lies one behind Robbie Fowler who has scored 9 and three behind Alan Shearer’s 11.
Another record he has set for City is scoring goals in seven consecutive home games last season.
During Sunday’s Wembley match, Aguero scored a second goal to put the game to bed in the 58th minute after he powered the ball past Caballero after Bernardo Silva’s pass had left David Luiz – making his first start since January – chasing shadows.
Pep Guardiola was delighted by his team’s display in sweltering conditions in north London.
‘I congratulate all the players,’ he told BT Sport. ‘It was so tough in the first half with the heat but we started well, so good.
‘The mentality was right and we beat a strong team.’
When asked if it will be tougher to defend the title than it was to win it in the first place, Guardiola added: ‘We don’t have to think about this too much.
‘This was the first game, now we need to prepare for the next one. We will see at the end of the season.’
