One of the biggest challenges for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool this season was to get his defence sorted as that is the only area where the Reds have struggled to see some progress. This season, under the leadership of Virgil Van Djik at the back, Liverpool have looked quite solid defensively. The Reds have conceded only five times this season in the 11 games played and it seems they are quite equipped in their bid to challenge for the Premier league title this season.
- Manchester City:
The Premier league champions have once again started the season on a high and are looking good to retain the title this season. The inclusion of Aymeric Laporte at the back has given a big boost to Pep Guardiola with their already settled defensive lineup. John Stones and Laporte are used more often this season and with full backs in Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy, City arguably have one of the best defensive lineup in the league.
The Spanish giants will fancy their chances to win the La liga this season with Real Madrid struggling to perform to their best. Till date, they conceded only 12 goals this season, which is quite a good record to have in the Spanish league. The pair of Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique at the heart of defence remains the key for Barcelona and also the presence of Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto brings more dynamism to their defence as the Catalans can surely considered to have one of the best defence in the world right now.
Not many expected Chelsea to start brightly as they have done under Maurizio Sarri in his very first season in the Premier league. Sarri’s Chelsea have looked a very balanced side with Eden Hazard leading the attacking line and David Luiz marshaling very well at the back. Luiz and Antonio Rudiger have surprisingly been very good in the defence and with Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso as fullbacks, Chelsea have a solid backline this season, having conceded only 7 goals this season.
- Atletico Madrid:
Atletico Madrid haven’t had a great start to the season but their defence has been once again absolutely brilliant. With Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin in the heart of the defence, Atletico possess immense stability at the back. They are arguably two of the best center backs in the world right now. Full backs Lucas Hernandez and Santiago Arias have done well to contribute both in the attack and defence, making the Atletico defensive lineup the best in the world right now.
