Top 5 Chelsea transfer targets this summer

Alvaro Morata

Rumours of Diego Costa returning to Atletico Madrid have resurfaced, and it looks a highly probable one. Conte will look to bring in Alvaro Morata, a player he has admired due to his playing style.

The Spanish striker is tall, powerful, and pacey. He has been brilliant in the limited appearances for Spanish giants Real Madrid netting 20 times in all competition. Morata has all the capabilities of fitting into the Premier League and make a threatening combination with Eden Hazard.

The 25-year old is nearing his peak and lack of game time for the Blancos can materialise Chelsea’s deal. Chelsea will be spending big this summer, and Morata could be the first of many to come.

Virgil Van Dijk

Chelsea got pretty close on signing the Southampton central defender Virgil Van Dijk last summer. Conte remains to be an admirer of Van Dijk’s defensive abilities and will look to rope him in after John Terry’s possible departure.

Van Dijk is a tall, and ball-playing defender who can dribble inside his own half and field passes into the opposition half. Van Dijk’s aerial prowess is next to none in the Premier League, and this will boost Chelsea’s back line that has suffered from set-piece lapses.

Van Dijk is rated € million in the transfer market, and the Dutch central defender could well be one of the costliest defenders ever. Conte will look to bolster his three-man defence and can flex his options whenever required.

Romelu Lukaku

Many might not know, but Lukaku was once a Chelsea player. The 24-year old Belgian has made a name for himself in Everton after a 3-year period with Chelsea from 2011-14. Conte could mould Lukaku into a traditional number 9 and will be one of the top transfer targets especially if the deal with Morata doesn’t materialise.

Romelu Lukaku is a left-footed striker who can power past defenders despite his tall stature and sturdy built. He is excellent in creating chances for his teammates and has been praised for his vision. Lukaku was aggrieved with his initial Chelsea days, but Conte would look to provide him regular game time.

He is surely one of Premier League’s best strikers at present and will make Chelsea shell out a fortune to reacquire his services. However, it is clear that he would be not interested in warming the bench any further.

Benjamin Mendy

An exciting young prospect, Benjamin Mendy is one of the many players that have helped AS Monaco win the Ligue 1 after 16 years. A zealous left back who acquires a thunderous left foot, Mendy has been monitored by many European giants.

Chelsea will look to field Mendy, and in Conte’s three-man defence he would get the chance to play further up the field. He has shown great crossing abilities but has been exposed at times when it comes to defensive duties. However, Conte is the perfect man to develop Mendy’s defensive traits.

Mendy might not be a regular starter as Marcos Alonso has been brilliant in Chelsea’s league winning season. Mendy does possess the flair, but it will be intriguing to see Conte’s tactical changes if he manages to bring Mendy in.

Alphonse Areola

This is more of a squad boosting move rather than anything else. Asmir Begovic is set to join Bournemouth, which leaves Conte in a fix. He has urged the management to bring in a backup goalkeeper, and Alphonse Areola of PSG might be the one.

He has been pushed down the pecking order by Kevin Trapp and will be looking for extra game time. Conte can rest Courtois and field Areola throughout the next season as they are set to participate in Champions League as well. Areola is a rather skilful keeper, but tends to be indecisive in the air and has made occasional blunders.

This seems to be a sensible move given a hectic schedule to follow. PSG will look to make the most out of this transfer speculation.
