United Defeated 2-1 By Real In UEFA Super Cup Final

Manchester United have lost to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup Final being beaten 2-1 by a side of extreme quality.

It was an entertaining match in Macedonia, played in extreme temperature with the 30+ degree temperature forcing water breaks in each half.

This was Real’s eleventh international finals win across the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup. However United can hold their heads high for a great performance that forced Real to fight until the end and against a fellow Premier League side, would have seen them take away 3 points.

Zinedine Zidane started Wales international Gareth Bale which some reports suggest was an indication that the striker is not up for sale and something that Jose Mourinho acknowledged, despite previously saying he would ‘fight’ to sign Bale IF Madrid wanted to. Casemiro opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a half volley, after almost putting his side ahead in the 17th minute, only to see a header cannon back off the crossbar.

Real doubled their lead in the 52nd minute after Isco combined with Bale on a one-two to dissect the United defence. The Spaniard finished with class, taking one touch to get the ball on to his right foot and the second to curl his strike beyond De Gea into the bottom corner with a superb goal.

Romelu Lukaku scored United’s consolation goal in the 62nd minute as he pounced on a rebound from Matic’s strike, firing his effort into the net from close range.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match Mourinho said: ‘I think we did well. I think they could score more goals than they did, we could score more goals than we did. They had a period of dominance, we had a period of dominance. We gave them a good fight. My boys can leave optimistic, proud and let’s go for Sunday.’
