As Manchester United make a bid for Alexis Sanchez to scupper Manchester City’s hopes of securing the Chile forward, Gunners legend Martin Keown insists Arsene Wenger would prefer Sanchez to move to the Etihad.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign a wide attacking player and City have offered £20m but are said to be reluctant to meet Sanchez’s wage demands, which are understood to be around £300,000-a-week.
But it has emerged United, whilst not desperate to sign Sanchez, have outbid City offering closer to Arsenal’s asking price of £35m with personal terms of £250,000 per week.
This is not the first time the two Manchester giants have battled to sign a player, with previous tug of wars between Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri and Dimitar Berbatov.
Mourinho’s acceptance of City winning the Premier League this season, has made for a grumpy Portuguese boss, but if United sign Sanchez and Ozil they could at least close the gap, this latest move proving he will go down fighting.
“Arsenal do not want Alexis Sanchez to go to Manchester United — not least because of the rivalry between Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“If United were able to sign Sanchez and Mesut Ozil — who are both out of contract at the end of the season — it would make them more competitive against City next season.
“Arsenal will do everything they can to stop these players going to United.
“This is a smart move from Mourinho. In recent weeks, he has been moody because he has had to accept that City will win the Premier League.
“By going in for Sanchez, Mourinho is showing that he is still a fighter. He and Pep Guardiola will battle it out for every player.”
Arsenal are currently sitting in sixth spot in the Premier League, two points behind fierce rivals Tottenham.
