- UEFA Champions League triumph:
Modric has always been an asset whenever it comes to his performances on the pitch. His relentless work-rate and energy on the field adds a different dynamic to his play. Last season, Modric played a very vital role in helping Real Madrid win the Champions league once again. His link up with the attack and support to the defence was second to none. With his incisive passes and tempo controlling gameplay, Modric did himself a huge favour as far as winning the Ballon d’Or is concerned.
- Magical FIFA World Cup 2018:
It was probably the most memorable World Cup in Russia this year as far as the Croatian fans are concerned. Croatia, against all odds went on to reach the World Cup final, achieving a remarkable feat in the history of the country. Modric was phenomenal for his country in Russia as he marshaled the troops immensely well to set an example and step up every single time his side needed him to. Alongside Ivan Rakitic, Modric controlled the midfield and looked dangerous every time they attacked. The World Cup almost assured Modric a very good chance of winning the Ballon d’Or.
- Messi and Ronaldo failing to step up in Russia:
The Ballon d’Or for more than a decade has been a two-horse race only with Messi and Ronaldo dominating the competition. After Messi’s triumph in the La liga and Ronaldo’s triumph in the Champions league, it was very likely that it would be one of the two again to win the Ballon d’Or but surprisingly both of them failed to capitalize to shine in the 2018 World Cup and it was Modric’s overall performance at both the club and international level that allowed him to win the Ballon d’Or.
- Change was imminent:
As much strong a competition it was between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the Ballon d’Or, it was becoming boring to a certain level. With only two players fighting for the trophy brought a monotonous vibe to the competition. Even when the likes of Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Manuel Neuer etc. coming close yet failing to win the trophy brought a certain amount of discontent among the fans, it became very inevitable that a new figure was needed to win the competition. With efforts and performance Modric put in this time around, there was not much doubting about how he was better than both Ronaldo and Messi and was the rightful winner of the Ballon d’Or.
