Why Manchester United lost to Derby County?

  1. Romelul Lukaku wasn’t efficient enough:

One of the biggest reasons why Manchester United have struggled this season is because they haven’t been sharp enough in front of the goal. Despite of creating significant amount of changes this season, United have struggled to convert those chances and kill the game. Those missed chances have come back to haunt the Red Devils and that was exactly the case against Derby County. Romelu Lukaku had quite a few chances to finish off the game after United took an early lead into the game but the Belgium striker wasn’t sharp enough on the night. Lukaku missed a one on one chance against Scott Carson and was guilty of not converting few half chances that came his way. It is not the first time this season that the former Everton striker has been guilty of missing such chances and if United are to turn their season around, Lukaku has to change his form and drastically help the Reds score regularly.

  1. Sergio Romero’s mistake:

David De Gea has been phenomenal for United and it was only understandable that Sergio Romero was given a chance to play in the Carabao Cup. Romero was doing well against Derby and while the score was 1-1, the Argentine goalkeeper committed a horrendous mistake by coming out of the box and handling the ball. This was only going to end in one way with Romero getting sent off. It didn’t take Derby time to capitalize on it as they scored the second but United did quite well to equalize late in the game. It is safe to say that had United had 11 players on the pitch, there might not have been a need of going to the penalties and United might as well have progressed to the next round.

  1. Complacency:

As it has seen frequently this season, United are known to switch off after starting brightly. United have immensely struggled to kill off games and it has more than often come to haunt them back. After taking a very early lead against Derby County, United didn’t manage to capitalize and allowed Derby to grow as the time passed. Eventually, the Championship side made them pay and it was not before Romero was sent off and Derby took the lead that United showed some intensity in their play. Eventually, they did get the equalizer but in the first place United should have won the game comfortably in normal time. It is this complacency from the United players that has been a big concern for the United players and it has to change if United want to change their season around.
